A D J U S T I N G T O T H E S P I R I T U A L W O R L D
We want to talk about the spirit world tonight, to tell you some of the things which happen there. Many people long to develop clairvoyance and clairaudience. They want to hear and see all that can be heard and seen of this other life to which they feel attached. Of course, you are attached to this life of spirit. It is your true home. You have come from that world of spirit to live this physical life; and until you free yourself, you are imprisoned in the flesh. But you also possess an intuitive faculty which tells you that you come from a more beautiful place than this earth, and for a purpose. Yours was not just a haphazard birth into physical life, but was according to plan. The great Architect, the Creator of the Universe, holds that plan of your life here on earth. You are like children who have come back to school; your own soul, although its memory has faded for the time being, subconsciously knows that you have come here to gain certain knowledge; you have come here to be trained, and that your daily life which seems so irksome, your body which is so tiresome to maintain, in reality are the restrictions which are urging your soul to evolve. There is a purpose in everything which happens to you. Therefore the first thing to do when you are ‘up against it’ is to ask yourself: ‘Now, what is my karmic debt here? What am I going to learn from this experience?’ You are learning how to unfold one or another of your soul-qualities which must be unfolded before you can be free from the bondage of physical life. We do not mean freedom by death, because death does not necessarily set you free from bondage. You can only free yourself from the limitations of the lower self by your own efforts.
When you have freed yourself you may enter into the heaven world of peace and serenity, of beauty, of joy. This requires a great deal of self-discipline together with aspiration. We think perhaps the very first quality that you need is true aspiration; aspire to knowledge, to wisdom also, and more than all, to love, because love is the key to the door of our prison house and hangs in the heart chakra. Next, aspire for wisdom, knowledge and freedom from the ignorance, the irritations and the burdens of your outer life. Be hopeful; many people are quite naturally responding to the spiritual world, from which all men come down into incarnation. Now, a powerful means for you to contact the higher state is during your sleep. Many people are already doing this. You will say: ‘But my dreams are all so confused, so muddled.’ Of course; there are different kinds of dreams. Many are due to physical discomfort in some form. We do not really mean those types of dreams when we speak of the contact with the spirit world; we mean the vivid experiences that leave a deep impression upon your physical brain. These impressions, if true, invariably come in the early morning.
You can aspire to the higher world, to the higher mental planes, and at times to the celestial plane, and you see beautiful things. Well, so can we. We are not limited to one level. We have a level of life that we find restful and congenial and we live at that level, but there are higher levels to which we can aspire when we have learnt the way and know how to find them. But even we cannot live for always on the mountain tops. We cannot emphasise too strongly the naturalness and the beauty of the life in the spirit world. But do remember that all depends upon the life which is lived on earth, the qualities developed in the soul, the quality of the consciousness of the individual; it all depends upon this as to where the soul finds itself, either during the sleep state or after shedding the physical body.
